Barisal Textile Institute was founded in 1980 as "District Textile Institute", which offers a two-year certificate course in Textile Technology. In 1993-1994, the District Textile Institute again upgraded to Barisal Textile Institute offers 3 year Diploma in textile technology.

General Admission procedure and admission requirements:
Admission to ARSTEC is very competitive and have high academic performance in SSC and HSC level. The selection of students for admission is made through admission test of 200 marks and considering GPA of SSC and HSC (Details on the Bulletin Board) student is given the opportunity to participate on the basis of merit. The entry requirements for admission test are:
01. Students must Bangladesh by birth.
02. Passed SSC (Science) with GPA 3.50 (without fourth subject) in any discipline.
03. Past HSC (Science) or equivalent examination of the academic year to obtain at least 3.5 GPA and average at least GP 4.00 but individually not below 3.0 in physics, chemistry and mathematics.
According to the rules for O-level students and a level
01. Must pass at Grade B in an average of five subjects.
02. In the A-level examination students must have grade B in mathematics, physics and chemistry.
03. No grade D is allowed in a subject.
